So the boat has an aluminum horizontally mounted propane tank that sits under the dash on the flybridge. It's stamped 1998 and I can no longer get it refilled as it needs to be re-certified. Take it into a place that does the work only to find they are unable to re-certify the tank. He explained that the new valves require a float inside the tank and that because my current valve is positioned in the middle of the tank it won't work (apparently, valve needs to be on the side).

Options are:

- Purchase a new Steel tank (not aluminum) for $270
- Purchase a new Aluminum tank for $600
- Have existing Auminum tank modified as a Vertical tank rather than Horizontal for $50 (cost of the new valve).

At this point, I believe I have the room to mount the tank in the vertical position so he is currently working on this option to see if he can re-valve the tank. Will simply need to work on an option for securing the tank which should be straight forward.

Go to Amazon and type in "marine LPG tank" They have one listed with level gauge for less than $100

If it is a horizontal tank I think there is an exception.

Horizontal tanks are exempt from the 1998 OPD regulations. Many LPG stations are not aware of this exemption.

Can Canadians buy off of ebay? There are some new marine ones on that site.

Looks like the Canadian equivalent does not make that exemption unfortunately: www.propane.ca/en/about-propane/safety

Yes, there is an Ebay Canada site. Cheapest tank there is $256 with a $197 delivery charge -- welcome to Canada eh. FedEx has to feed their teams of sled dogs somehow I guess.

Terry, does your boat have a cockpit hardtop? On my 3788 I replaced the horizontal tank in the flybridge with a propane locker on the hardtop.

Here in Canada, I get mine filled up easily at my local (specialised) propane dealer. I believe it is the original 1986 tank.

Spoke to the guy at BC Safety Authority and sent him the photos. My cylinder is considered a propane "cylinder" and therefore does indeed need to be recertified every 10 years -- for other Canadians -- if it is stamped 4E240 means it's a cylinder....

propanedepot.ca quoted me $289 +fill+taxes awhile back for a 20lb horizontal tank. I believe they're in Burnaby...so not sure what they'd charge for shipping to the island.

Thanks -- they *may* have found a way to recertify my tank and add the float. My tank has a second spare port on the top that is unused. They are going to try to use it -- otherwise it looks like he has a used aluminum tank that he can sell me.

You could sell the tank to someone in the US depending on your location.

US doesn't require a recertification on a horizontal tank. Canada does. Make sure you fill your expired tank in the US before you come if you have one!!!

To get my tank recertified it has to have the OPV installed (Overfill Prevention Valve) which is a float installed within the tank that stops it from being filled beyond 80%. It then has to be stamped as such in order for the gas station attendants to be allowed to fill it.

I know the US doesn't require it on these tanks.
Recertification is a joke. They look at the tank, stamp new dates on it, charge you $5.00 or whatever.
That is why I think they would do it.
Or you can buy the right size number stamp and make it a do it yourself project. :)
Another thought.
Is there any way you can just use a regular tank. That way you could just exchange it and not have it filled.
Another strange thing here in the states. I can get a tank filled much cheaper than an exchange. I took a tank I got at an exchange to get filled. It was 12 years out of date. They do not recertify on the tanks used for exchange. I started looking at the dates and most are out of date. Painted nice so they look new tho. So much for safety eh?

Wanted to report the successful filling today, in Seattle, of my 1996 horizontal propane tank which is the same as the propane tank of the original poster, TenMile, as I've the same basic Bayliner 3388 boat (except the 1996 model) with the same horizontal propane tank . Here's what happened.

Maybe 3 weeks ago I pulled the horizontal tank from my boat from under the flybridge dash where Bayliner installed it. Went to a local propane refill company that said it could not refill my horizontal tank unless it was "recertified", and stamped, and such. When I left that place, I had the impression that I'd end up having to buy a new horizontal tank at some considerable expense without good reason, as my tank was in good condition.

Today, thanks to this thread, I printed the exemption for horizontal propane tanks NeilW kindly referred to, and called a Seattle boat shop that refills propane tanks. Mentioned my tank was horizontal and inquired whether they were familiar with the exemption in NeilW's post. They were, and mentioned my tank needed to have the original fittings, and be rust free and in good condition, and also have the steel "guard" that protects the original fittings. They explained no need for a "recertification", as the horizontal tank was exempt (with the provisos of original fittings, rust free, and steel guard etc). Just bring it in, they'll check it to make sure it qualifies for the exemption, and refill it. So it is now full, and my thanks to all for this thread! I do wish that TenMile, being in Canada, ends up with a similar good result.

Don't confuse certification and OPD requirements. They are totally are different things.
  • Aluminum and steel propane cylinders can be refilled for up to 12 years after their manufacture date. After 12 years they need to be re-certified and stamped. The re-certification is good for 5 years. Note that composite and plastic cylinders require more frequent certification. Most propane distributors have people qualified to re-certify metallic cylinders. There are very few places qualified to re-certify non-metallic cylinders.
  • Propane tanks require an Overfilling Prevention Device (OPD). In the US horizontal cylinders manufactured before October 1, 1998, are exempt from the OPD requirement.
  • A propane seller is not supposed to refill a cylinder that is out of certification or does not have an OPD and is not exempt.

Dear TenMile,
I have managed to accumulate two extra horizontal tanks from the recent purchase of our 3288 and from our previous boat. I am getting one of the three re-certified (re-valved) right now but have the two extra. We happen to live in the same city so I can tell you where to get one my extras done if you would like to have one.
