Another productive day today even though I had to take a trip to get another sheet of plywood. Using the styrofoam pattern I had for the transom I was able to use it to make the pattern for the bulkhead to the cabin first and then cut it down to make the one for the forward bulkhead. They both need to be adjusted a bit, but they are done and ready for the most part. As stated before It's just a lot easier IMO to fit the bulkheads first, then cut the slots in them when the stringers are in.

This image is hidden for guests.
Please log in or register to see it.

The forward one will need to be cut down to fit the level of the floor when the stringers are installed. The center for the main floor will get cut down when I get everything in and know the exact level it ends up needing.

Well, that's going to be it for a while. I have a couple carb sets to build and a Christmas party to get ready for. I was really hoping to get the stringers glassed in by now, but that's the way it goes. IF I can get more done I'll let you know. But it's time to spend family time and get ready for Christmas.

Larry, this may help put you at ease:
There are several of us here who are upside-down (financially) in our boats, after having done extension and expensive restorations.
Ya just need to acquire an attitude in that you'll be using it up in the form of fun and family enjoyment.
Not much different than if you had any other rather expensive hobbies or interests.

Let's use $20k for purchase and restoration cost.
If the boat serves you for 10 years, $20K divided by 10 = a cost of $2k per year of ownership.
Not too bad, and if all goes well, you still have a bit of equity when the time comes to sell it.

If you were to do a Google Search for the phrase "Up-side-down", a picture of me and my boat would pop up! :silly:

Larry, you are doing an above average restoration to the structural components... keep up the good work. :)

I totally understand the upside down part of all this. But my view on it is that there was no way I would spend the kind of money it would take to get a newer boat. Yes, I'll probably put way more into this than it's worth in monetary value. But the pride, knowledge and piece of mind of what I'm going to be enjoying for years to come is worth the price and labor that's going into it. A saying that my father used as I was growing up has stuck with me as well as become a curse at times, "If your going to do something, Do It Right, don't do it half a***d". I've lived my life that way ever since and don't know how to cut corners. Quality and craftsmanship is all I'll leave behind when IT or I'M gone. I never want anyone to ever say that guy did a terrible job on this.
As for expensive hobbies, I do have one of those. I have fully restored motorcycles in my second shop that cost several thousands to built. I ride them occasionally, but they mostly just sit there till it's time to take one of them to a show. I just consider it an investment in the future as well as a way to teach my own kids the value of quality and pride in what ever you do. I'd show you some of them but this probably isn't the place to do that. Maybe some other time.

OK, I'll stop rambling now. Thank you for the kind words on my Overkill restoration. It means a lot coming from folks like yourself that have been in this for years.

Larry, you can remove the word "probably", and replace it with "most definitely". :silly:

But the pride, knowledge and piece of mind of what I'm going to be enjoying for years to come is worth the price and labor that's going into it.
Fully understood.

A saying that my father used as I was growing up has stuck with me as well as become a curse at times, "If your going to do something, Do It Right, don't do it half a***d".
My father and grandfather both had a similar saying..... "do it correctly the first time, or you can expect to be doing it again".... or sump'n like that.

Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain!!!!! .....hahah

Rick is so far underwater with his boat that it grew gills. :)

The thing about restoring a boat isn't for investment or making money. At one point I could have actually made money in my boat but the down turn in the economy had dumped the price so low that now I couldn't even sell it for the price of one of the new transmissions and engines.

For me it is all about the hobby the craftsmanship the experience. A new boat the size of mine costs around $300,000.

I bet I have $30,000 just in parts on mine resto boat ( I stopped counting along time.ago).

That being said it will be as nice or nicer than the $300000 boat and it will be the last one I ever have to restore unless another one comes along with the hull #21 or 24 jeeze.

LOL, too funny. The worst part of that Rick is that I can't work on the boat right now. Not only am I getting ready for Christmas, but we just bought a used motor to put in my sons car yesterday. It's frustrating too because I'm finally at the point of fitting and glassing in the stringers.

Sleep is over rated lol.

I often only sleep a few hours a night. I also often see Rick posting at 2:30 am. Now I know he doesn't stay up that late.

If if wasn't so freaking cold outside I would be working on my own boat right now instead of just talking about it.

PS.... I'm not nearly as old as Rick so I don't know what my problem is.

Great job so far!

34 yrs old and run the kerosene heater this time of year while restoring my Mustang and other projects. Laying on the cold concrete while welding sucks no matter the ambient garage temp.
