Should my manul head hold a little water in the bottom of the bowl to keep the smell from coming back from the holding tank? I thought that there was always a little water in the bottom of the bowl in the past, but now can not keep any water in it. It is like it is all being sucked out into the holding tank. I'm pretty sure the tank vent is clear , but need to make sure.

Open the waste cap and run some water into the tank while you have your hand over the vent and you should feel air flow... OR... put your nose next to the vent... your choice...

choose wisely...

:( my head done the same thing, i remover it from boat and gave it a good cleaning.
Over the years the salt leaves a build up on the Joker valve and other parts. I couldn't buy new valve here so i cleaned it good replaced all seals reinstalled and now no problems.
It's kind of a nasty job but eliminates the smell.

I am a happy camper now I have my wash down system installed and working no more dipping water from over side with bucket. It was a real bear getting intake hose from engine room to sea chest in galley deck for supply water.
I stay out several days and clean my fish on table that fits in pole holder then store fish in big cooler full of shaved ice from processing plant.

I like how you hid the washdown behind the cover. Clean look. Where did you get that cover from?

I am a owner of a 1993 2859 and would also like the address of that thread. We love the layout of the boat (we do not have the Alaskan bulkhead). We are in Southern California.

Hello everyone,

I am new to the board and a new Bayliner owner. I recently purchased a 1994 Bayliner classic 2859 with the 7.4 mercruiser. I run the boat in saltwater and was needing some advise on flushing the engine.

Does the motor have a sea strainer ? If so do I just run fresh water through the strainer for 10 or so minutes at idle while in Neutral ?

Or do I have to put a flushing attachment over the water intake openings ? And if this is the case... Can this be done while the boat is in the water?

Does this have to be done after every run?

Any thoughts on the product Salt Away?

Also, the boat has a battery switch and I forgot to turn it to the off position when I left the boat at the harbor last... I know all electrical components were off... Will my batteries still die since I forgot to turn the switch off?

Lastly, When putting water in the holding tank... Is that just regular water from a hose or does it require something special? Thinking just regular hose water but wanted to be sure:)

Thanks in advance,

Thomas

I'll try to answer, and welcome to the BOC! Yes, you should flush after every use. Yes, you should use the "earmuffs" flushing attachment. No, it really can't be done in the water. When I flush mine, i run it until it reaches operating temp, probably 6-8 minutes, and I usually bump the rpm to @ 1000. I can't comment on Saltaway, but I know some folks here use it.

It's hard to say about the batteries, depends on what might be running. I use tap water in mine, but I sanitize the system twice a year. It involves adding 1/4 cup of bleach per 15 gallons of capacity, don't forget to add the water heater. Flush thru the lines and faucets until you smell bleach, then top off the tank and let sit for 4-8 hours. Then drain, fill with fresh, flush lines and faucets, top off, you're done. Good luck!

Having some issues with my all around nav light.... The old one was not working so I replaced it and still nothing... Thinking it may be the fuse? Any idea on the location of the all around nav light fuse on a 94 2859 classic?

All other nav lights work***

All you have to do is run the sink with the hot water tap on. It doesn't need to be hot water. That will fill and flush the water heater

:) i am finally a happy boater.
I had bad intake manifold gasket leaking oil, then engine overheated and warped intake manifold , had to replace it but then upon removing the carb 1 of the bolt down ears was broke so back to parts store for new carb, got it installed and fired up and listened to her purr, went out for test run with my mechanic (grandson) and done some fine tuning, and now I am finally getting the 400hp out of this new engine i now cruise at 18-22 kn's at 3500rpm top rpm's at 3850 sofar.
Fishing has been good which is a plus.
Hope all has been having a good boating season.
;) Cheers

Hi Flemming
I got home Monday the 29th. I drove from Prince Rupert so sorry I missed coming to your place for coffee but will someday even if Fritzman and I have to make it a short road trip.P.S. I haven't told him yet. LOL
I flew to Fairbanks spent a few days with my daughter then she took me to Anchorage where I flew out to my adopted sons cabin on a remote lake for moose hunting 10 days no kill but really enjoyed the visit as it may be our last as he has cancer tumor in brain, so in order to get all this done I had to fly.
My wife has back surgery the 7th and i have knee replacement shortly after that, then as soon as I get heeled up I am taking my electric reel to my friends place in Hawaii for 2 or 3 wks fishing. then it will be time to head back to Alaska for the summer.
Hope all is well with you.

PS since the mention of the knee, He had both taken care of, in therapy now. My self busy patching leaks that I found wile up in Ketchikan. Just finished Saturday reinstalling the forward hatch, after building a short riser to fit under the brace ring.

hi Chief

Actually dirty? No
But swampy smelling,,,,,not desirable at all.

And the boat is 18 yrs old now, I've seen the crud that had accumulated in the tank of my 2452 - that black, skanky stuff that collects in it.
Bleh..... me no likey the thought of it one bit. I do take showers in the evenings and the water stinks.

At the very least I''ll find some kind of treatment to use on it. But flushing the tank is problematic too cuz it doesn't just run out the drain, it needs to be pumped out with my bilge pump. So it's not like I can just flush it for an hour

thanks :)

Hi ladyCruser
These plastic water tanks can be a problem for sure and I've seen my share of them. Being a Captain of vessels from sea going tugs to tankers and passenger ships you have to make sure the water is good and safe to use. The plastic tanks are used mainly on these smaller vessels but just the same there are problems on all vessels!!!! And when you have a problem it is a real problem.....
I flushed my tank using bleach solution and letting it set overnite then unhooking the outlet connection on the bottom of the tank and draining into the bilge, make sure you get it completely full so the top of the tank gets the bleach, too. I done this twice and now my tank is clean and has no smell and water taste and looks good.
A plus to draining into bilge is it cleans it,too. You will have to rinse the tank several times to get the bleach smell out.
If you need to remove the tank I would get in touch with the Fritzman he has pictures and i think the solution to removing the tank, but it's a major project.
Good luck on what ever route you take.

I bet I could fit a small soft tank under there, even 10 gallons would be nice!

We just bought a used RV, unknown maintenance, and I used the sanitizing method I've posted here previously. After doing this, we took a 3 week trip (to your end of the country) using the water tank, drinking included, with no ill effects. Here you go:

Add 1/4 cup of bleach (to an empty tank) per 15 gallons of capacity, including the water heater, and round up. Then fill the tank and WH with fresh water, then when full, run water through ALL taps until you smell the bleach. Top off the tank and let it sit for at least 4 hours, no more than 8 hours. Then drain, flush until no bleach smell, and fill with fresh water, good to go. I suppose you could do this twice to be extra sure. This comes from many RV and marine sources.

Hi LazyCruser, with water tank issues I would first go with the clean out and soak, my 2859 is a 93 same tank. I did have a leak issue that I solved by building hatches to address this problem, check out my post Feb. 28 14 in addition it shows new shower pump with switch valves to have an additional bilge pump out all in a protected box, hope this helps. :P :P

Thanks guys, will try this in the spring.
Too bad that to flush the tank the damn bilge pump has to run so much - on my boat it doesn't just drain out the back drain :(
