I've had her for two years and just moved it to Bellingham yesterday. It will be a lot easier to finish all of the projects since she is 15 minutes from home now.

There have been several problems fixed with this project boat so far.

What are your WOT, speed @ WOT and props being used? Also what pin is the outdrive on? Fwd, center or Aft.

Thanks,
Ron

Hey Ron!

First of all, get rid of that prop and go to a 16 X 13 or better yet if you have a few bucks, get a DP and use B2's. The drive should be in the center pin. I have teh Sunbridge and when I swapped to a DP lower, I hit 39.5 MPH WOT under full ideal conditions! Think about that DP!!! It is deadly for speed and economy!

39.5!? WOW!!

I was able to get less than 4K WOT and the vibration was pretty bad. @ 3K we limped along at 9 mph. The bottom was dirty, but that would not account for the vibration.

The pre-purchase inspection showed one low cylinder compression and later on I found the timing was also 10 degrees retarded. Best I've gotten so far is around 18 mph. There have been so many "stupid" things I've found wrong on this boat, I really don't trust that the engine has been taken care of.

I think I'll check the compression and if it's still bad, I'm looking at a partial/full Michigan Motors replacement.

Then I will definitely go with a DP!

Michigan Motorz is a GREAT choice! Go with eitehr the Vortec or better yet the 383 stroker for the much needed HP for this boat. The stock 260 is way under powered. I repowered with a MM stock 260 and did not have the advice of this board or would have used the 383 or the Vortec. I now am on plane at about 2800 and cruise right along usually around 3000 at 22. The DP made all the difference. Now rememebr I do not have teh CB model, but either way, that 1.95 DP will make that old girl feel young again!

Congratulations on a beautiful boat. I've not seen that interior configuration on a 2850 before. Did you do the customization with the sideboard and new cabinets?

Well done!!

Hello all, 83 Contessa CB, forth year, check out our albums to see the transformation. Only thing missing is Radar installed in 2010 and i take full credit for the camper top design ;) and had an awsome top maker. She's getting a new riser and fuel pump as we speak, will splash down first week of May, its the boat to have :cool

Hello all I also have a 1987 Contessa. It's has a Vortec and a OMC cobra. I have a question. I'm starting my fourth season with this boat. Every year I have been running it with the trim tabs down. It just seemed to get up on plane better and run level. I was informed the other day by the owner of my marina that I should be only using the tabs to level the boat under load from side to side. I have never tried to run the boat with out the tabs down. It would run 32 mph WOT but did use a lot of gas. the boat is scheduled back in the water this week. I could use any advise on how you run your boats.

Thanks,
Ray

Ray, I may be corrected but you should only need your trim to get you up on plane, or in uneven seas, at plane you should be at 0 trim, comments??

I guess I don't qualify as an owner any longer. Sold our 1985 Contessa Sunbridge with twin Volvo 5.0 V8's a couple of weeks ago.
We owned her 10 years and learned a bit about them.
Maybe could help with some questions.
Just my thoughts. We have owned a lot of boats in our 50 plus years of boating. Imo, the Contessa is one of the best layouts for its size. So much usable space and comfort.

1984 2850 Contessa with Command Bridge. Bought with single prop 280 drive and cruise was 11 mph @3400 with full tabs to stay on step; max speed was 22 @4500 (WOT). Converted to duo prop w/B3s and now on step without tabs and 19-22 mph @3400 depending on the water conditions; max speed is 31 @4300 (WOT).

Replaced both heads on the AQ260 a couple years ago with DART heads, to include complete valve job, and Mallory electronic ignition. Runs like a top and if you believe DART, the heads added between 15 - 20 hp.

Splashed the new to me 2850 over the weekend. I think once I get used to the size and how everything operates, I will like it. Planes off quick and wot is 4100 rpm, speed unknown at this time. When you slow down, it starts walking all over the place. Can't get the trim tabs working. Hopefully I can get back to the boat this weekend and do some trouble shooting.

Yah, they wander a lot at low speeds. Trim tabs will make a huge difference. I have found that just a little down tab straightens her out a lot at low speeds. Think that is common to deep vee hulls at low speeds.
