We LOVE our 2000 - 3988 but sometimes that step from the cockpit into the boat seems pretty big. I have seen some photos of 3988s where some owner have added steps. I am wondering if there is a place to purchase one with a flange that bolts down or if they are custom made. Here is an example photo.

Looks like a home made step constructed out of 2x's, painted white and held in place with hook and eye on each side.

I need to do something similar for our 3818. I gotta plan around the hatch though.

I feel your pain and have purchased a temporary step that I found on line. It's ok for now; however, it's not wide enough and not as stable as I would like. I like what I see in the picture you posted and it does look like a custom job. Please let us know if you find a nice step that's available for purchase. I'll continue the search as well and will post anything I find. We may end up having to fabricate one.

This is what I'm using for now but, as I mentioned, wish it was wider and, thus more stable.

At TRAWLER FEST this year I toured a 3988 live-a-board with his home made step.
I am planing on copying it this winter.

I was thinking something similar, but using 1/2 inch starboard.

Jeff,
I was thinking white Starboard also; color matches the boat and no maintenance. Good idea.

any of the composite decking materials from home depoe or lowes would be the most affordable choice. it would look and last as well as any expensive "marine" material...
it needs no paint, its easy to work with and using a router with a round-over bit, one can finish the edges nicely, as well as use a 45ยบ-V bit to route traction grooves in the surface of the steps...
