I just had a rebuilt 5.9 Cummins 270hp installed and when you start it, it smokes , is this a common thing until it is broken it?

Jim, I'm sorry I cannot expertly answer your question. However, it would not surprise me in the least that a diesel would smoke until the rings seat.

Jim,
It has been my experience that Diesel engines smoke initially upon starting but should clean up after they get warm. That can take a minute or so. Certainly give it some time to break in. Was the fuel injection system rebuilt including injectors?

Every Cummins marine diesel I've ever had smoked on startup

This should clear up as the engine warms up.

Hopefully you were briefed on how to break in a Cummins engine.

If not, its simple. Run the engine hard. Dont idle the engine, get after it when underway.

From Tony Athens, Cummins rings are convex when installed and break in in about ten hours. Full flat wear can take up to 300 hours.
Yes they all smoke on startup until warm.

Curious on why you had to replace your engine? I have same engines and would like to know. Thanks.
