I tracked my boating expenses last year. I had never tracked boating related expenses before. It was somewhat interesting to see what I spent on my hobby. Last year I was somewhat limited by my daughters wedding expenses. Hopefully this year I will have more boat bucks to spend on fuel and I can go to a few more places. Hope there are no further repairs but it is a 36 year old boat so we'll see.

I'm going to try it again this year. I am already half way to my last years total and I am about 60 days from launch. I should be getting my invoice for my summer dockage later this month. That will bump up the total a bit.

My spending has started early this year with my transmission repair and such. The marina where I wintered has billed me for all services performed since I paid my winter storage bill last October.

My expenses so far in 2017 are as follows:

Winterize Engine Humbug Marina 290.00
Oil & Filter Change Humbug Marina 164.00
Winterize A/C System Humbug Marina 40.00
Shrinkwrap Humbug Marina 370.00
Misc Mechanical Parts Humbug Marina 69.30
Transmission Rebuild Humbug Marina 2355.18

For the Element: $140 spare prop, $600 custom bimini, $200 fish finder, $130 smart tabs, about $125 in fuel, $600 for the dock, $95 for shrink wrap and winter storage, and $14,975 for beer. For my cruiser (in case anybody is thinking of losing their mind and buying one): Dock $3100, fuel $2600, haulout/winterize/storage $1825, and $625 for shrink wrap.. Add food/booze/toys and that's probably another $1500. And to think I have a better time banging around in my little Element!

This makes me feel a little better (not much, but a little). Bought a used 2556 in mid-Jan and have been tracking my expenses in a big spreadsheet. I've been horrified by how much money it's sucked up so far. Excluding purchase price:

$1,059.62 Pickup expenses - Rented a truck to tow it 1100 miles, fuel, food, lodging. Sea trial was on pickup date, so opted not to use a shipper.
$1,568.00 Documentation expenses - Survey, permits, registration, plates, sales tax.
$2,348.13 Recurring expenses - Insurance, storage (stupid expensive in Southern California), memberships, annual maintenance.
$917.18 Safety expenses - Replacing missing, outdated, or expired safety gear.
$559.52 Equipment expenses - Misc gear to outfit the boat - fishing gear, cookware, tableware.

$6,425.45 total (so far)

I'm still working on fixing some of the problems found in the survey, and I'll probably be replacing the fishfinder/chartplotter which dates from 2002. And I put off some purchases til April (month I switched my credit card to 5% cash back at sporting goods stores for fishing gear, deck chairs, etc), So it's not over, not by a long shot.

That is certainly one way to look at it. Next week I am going to order a new dock box for my new home. The old ones latch is broken and it could not be locked so that's a great reason to get a new one.

Agree with that Doug. It's my hobby that I enjoy. I kind of know if I have enough $ or not.

Anyway...
$175 bottom paint stuff
$50 manifold gaskets
$60 4 new fenders
$100 misc
that's all that I can think of other than a lot of cleaning time.
well wait.... the Admiral did just did buy a used Sea-Doo = $1,400. She spends more than me...
