Here's a NOAA demo site that is fun to play with:

For free navigation software you can get Seaclear II. The charts you can down load from NOAA and convert them. You have to do other things to each chart to make it so the system can relate to it.
I found it just as easy to pay $19.95 for a disk with the software and all the charts for the entire US and inland waterways. Very easy, just pop it in, install the software, install what areas you want and off you go. You can also run it off the disk.
I use a Pharos GPS that cost me $39.95 that also came with Microsoft Streets & Trips for mapping road ways and planning trips. Includes recourses, which can be handy when you get into a port you can search for restaurants, stores, etc.
Pat

Edit:
Here is where I got the Seaclear II disk with all the charts. He also sells the GPS but without the street program. I foudn Rob very helpful. When I first went to install and test the program I couldn't get it to show my location. Spent a couple of days and worked with Rob, who offered to send me a new package. Then I realized I was at my home which was not on any chart. The program it turns out was smarter than me. Hate when that happens.

Monterey10,
Sorry, thanks for posting that site. That is very cool. About time that they made the charts more 21st century computer useable. It will be interesting to see what this will lead to.

Open CPN is similar to SeaClear II. Check it out. It may be more to your liking.
