With the weather we have had in TN I would not be surprised if there are several just at our marina. I know several people who just use a bilge heater down here.

I can't recall if I mentioned it before, but many of you know I repowered our 3888 with new Volvo 8.1L big blocks before we sold it. The new owner froze and broke one engine in the first winter he had the boat.

Those engines had closed loop cooling so he probably only had to replace exhaust manifolds, and maybe the fibreglass mufflers. Lucky.

The cracks showed up with gushing water right at first start-up, and were spotted by the marina's mechanic. I'm told the mechanic was the same mechanic who winterized the boat, but conveniently forgot this as he screamed to shut it down and went on and on about the idiot who winterized the boat! :o

The reality is, these boaters are already unhappy! They just aren't aware of it yet! :(

Let's hope that WE (BOC'rs) don't have any! :)

I could NEVER, in good conscience ness, recommend electric heat to provide the main means of freeze protection for our expensive marine engines..... NEVER! :hammer

right...because in some areas, unusually cold, wintery weather goes hand-in-hand with power outages.

Well there have been a couple mentioned all ready here. Don't know the story however.
The replacement of a 454 is a recent one.
Agree with the electric heat. Just as a temp measure when you are monitoring it. Have the Honda ready. :)

Exactly!
And 'Ole Murphy will tell ya that when this happens, you'll be lucky to have gotten a phone call. (your power may not be out at home!)

It will also be during the middle of the night, already freezing temps, wet wind blowing frozen rain sideways......, and now you are on your way to the boat, ill prepared with a flashlight in hand.... tools in the other, to do what should have been done in the first place! :hammer

I never saw the episode Marc - so I can't say yes or no. If it was my boat, they taped the episode after I sold it.

The marina finally remembered doing the work when the owner showed his invoice. The marina fixed it. I never heard how extensive the damage was, but I KNOW the coolant was good, and only one engine was missed, so the most he could have lost would be one raw water pump, one strainer, one cooler, 2 exhaust manifolds and risers, 1 muffler, and a real remote chance of losing 2 cylinder heads.
Pretty lucky overall.

I've seen quite a few in our area despite a pretty short cold snap. The cheapies come up for sale on craigslist and sure enough cracked blocks...

+1 but I'm nervous.

Fresh water side was good to -100.

Must have pumped 15 gals of purple stuff through each block from multiple directions on the raw water side.

One can only hope.

If you followed the mfg suggestions, there is nothing to worry about.
If you reinvented the wheel, well you might worry.

That's all I have ever done, was make sure the block had no water, and in 30 years we have never had a cracked block.

+1

Cheap insurance. 150 dollars for my marine mechanic lets me sleep well at night knowing if he missed something he has to replace my 305, not me.

If I had a nickel for every cheapass who came into West Marine and ONLY wanted the pink RV stuff...well, I wouldn't have needed to work at West Marine. It was a lot easier to convince them when I added up the cost difference between 4 gallons of pink vs. the 4 gallons of green -100....and then a cost of a longblock from MichiganMotorz.

I ONLY used the -100 on my boat, and then after I pumped it through the engine, I drained the block and disconnected EVERY hose on the block. Then I drained antifreeze through it again to make sure I got it all.

Never a problem, and we regularly get below 0 here in Chicago in the winter.
