Hello everyone,

My brother and I have recently been chatting about getting fishing licenses. However, we do not eat fish(but like to fish) so we do not know where to go about fishing. I live at alki beach so dropping into the sound is pretty easy.

Is this a viable area to fish at?

We are also considering tossing a crab pot over the side but do not know where to do such a thing.

Last thing, we will probably be able to give the crabs away to friends if we catch em. Not sure about the fish, i've heard that catch and release kills the fish so should we keep the fish and try to give away? Or is releasing them OK?

any advice on rod & reel combos as well what type of lure's to use, or type of fish to fish for would be great. we are total noobs.

TIA

I'm out here on the right coast, but it sounds like you and your brother have little to no fishing experience. Before you start dropping big money on equipment, I suggest that you go out with a local charter outfit and first, ask a lot of questions, second, decide if you actually like fishing.

Personally, I drop a line in the water every chance I get, but not everyone feels the same way. Again, I think your best bet is to go out on a charter and gain some experience.

I'm not much of a fisherman, but you see a lot of guys fishing down past the south end of vashon over towards point defiance, then also between there and the narrows bridge closer to the gig harbor side. I'm guessing with all those guys fishing there must be something there??
As for crabbing on the south end of vashon, i've had luck near the mouth of quartermaster harbor. AGain, you'll see lots of pots there. It is kind of an area where you might want to hang around a bit and watch that your pots don't "swim" away. Good luck and have fun and if you catch any fish, you might want to give them to me since I'll never catch one.

North end of vashon? Can't help you there.

thanks for the info! I've chatted with a few co-workers who have fished in the past and got some decent info. I know I like fishing, I use to river fish with my dad from shore, thats a lot different then the boat tho...

My boat is setup to fish, rod holders, down rigger mount, trolling motor mount.

ill need rods and a down rigger. good to hear that south vashon is fishable! thats close enough!

ill look into a charter but might be out of our budget.

Good link to Salmon Univerity! Grwat site with a great staff.

Area 9 and Area 10 have been slow at best. But we're hoping it picks up soon!
