Headed off to Bamfield this coming Friday June 27th and will have the boat there until mid-August. Staying at a dock near the medical clinic. If any BOC members are out that way and see "BuckTail" out that way come by and introduce yourself.

Have a nice trip. Be sure to post some pictures.
Bamfield is on our cruising wish list, but is going to have to wait a couple of years I think.

Did the trip from Victoria to Bamfield on Friday morning. We left the dock about 6:20 and rounded Cape Beale at about 10:20.

I've done this trip now about a half dozen times and this was one of the easier cruises by far. Normally the wind comes from the west and is on our nose making for a rough ride. This time, it was from the ESE so on our port quarter the entire trip. Seas were almost flat calm for 3/4 of the trip and we didn't even encounter swells until we passed the Carmanah lighthouse -- and then, they were on our rear quarter with the wind. A bit more lumpy the last 45 minutes, but it just meant I had to cover my coffee with a lid.

Spent the weekend fishing around Barkley Sound. Nothing terribly large with our best pair of Chinook at 18 and 20lbs.

Boat is now out there for the next several weeks and we will be back and fourth several times. If you want to check out where I am -- find the boat "BuckTail" under Yachts and you can zoom in on the chart: rvyc-cruising.swiftsure.org/

I mostly go after springs, but I have a specific order to fill the freezer with halibut this year. Will get out to a couple of the outside hali banks to get a few.

Our times will overlap Doug -- so far, our plan is to bring the boat back on or around the 17th of Aug. CH6 on the VHF or you can text me on my mobile and I can let you know what's happening and where....

By mid-September the Albacore Tuna should be getting closer to the outside banks....talk about a trip of a lifetime!

Just got back from the Lund/Gorge Harbour areas. We fished the area pretty good, including the south areas of Campbell River. We were not skunked, but it has been very hit and miss on the inside this year, unlike last year. We hope to get out to the Bamfield area in the next few weeks. Would probably launch in Port Alberni. Would love to have an escort to the halibut areas on that side.

I am sure you know this Doug, but new rules are in place now for Non-Canadian residents who intend to fish and retain Halibut in the area Southern Vancouver Island area (Swiftsure and Barkley Sound).

www.pac.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/fm-gp/rec/tidal-maree/a-s23-eng.html

Electronic Licence Restriction : Halibut

Only a Canadian resident may fish for halibut under an electronic licence in Areas 23, 121 and 123. Non–residents of Canada wishing to fish for and retain halibut in Management Areas 121, 23 and 123 must purchase an electronic licence through a Canadian Independent Access Provider.

Patrevan: Halibut can be caught almost anywhere. If you head 2mi off from Beale and find some flats you can pick them up -- further out you go, the better.

Some of the regs on Chinook and Coho just changed in the past couple of days: www.pac.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/fm-gp/rec/tidal-maree/a-s23-eng.html

4 Coho inside (Wild or Hatchery)
2 Coho outside until Sept 1 (then 4) -- 1 may be wild

Chinook slot size for inside Barkley Sound comes into effect today (July 15th) -- only 1 over 77cms, and 1 under 77cms allowed.

Thanks Tenmile. Still dont have a schedule to get to Bamfield, but we are heading to Goldriver on August 11 . Launch there and will follow our noses to the fish. Lots of good anchorages in Nootka sound. The fishing on the inside here (east side of Vancouver Island) has become very hot of late, some saying the best in memory.

Terry, Thanks for the info... we purchase our licenses when we get to Ucluelet so no problem retaining a butt for US fishermen...

TenMile. How far offshore are the tuna? A friend who fishes Kyuquot annually in mid August says that they are out about 30 miles at that time (from Kyuquot). Can you reach them from Ucluelet? That would be a trip to remember!
