Guys,
I'm going to be moving my 38 to So. Cal here in a few months. Cruising a garage sale recently I came across a Penn 114H Special 6/0 Senator reel on a Penn 3160S 6/0 6'6" 40-60 lb. line that I bought for $40. The reel is spooled with mono, don't know what test. I don't know much about fishing but I'd like to drag a lure around as I cruise the So. Cal area enroute to wherever and see what bites.
My questions are: Will this stout rig work ok for my intended use? What kind of line would you recommend I use as I want to strip off the old line? What's a good all around general purpose lure and how should I rig it up?
Thanks in advance.

Jim, that is a good basic rig for trolling.

To maximize the line capacity, I'd fill that reel with PowerPro Spectra 80 lb braid, followed with a 100 yard topshot of 50 lb mono. For lures, a good old cedar plug is a go-to lure (6-8") as are feathers of various sizes and colors (dark colors when its dark, and lighter colors when its light outside.
