We've never taken the boat to the south sound, but are planning an extended trip this summer. When we ask locals where the Dungeness are, we get mostly shrugs and "Hood Canal" as answers. Anyone got any experience or spots they're willing to share? (I know, but I'd do it for you)

Bonus for information around the Fair Harbor/Allyn/Grapeview area.

Thanks in advance

In general, some places that have been good in south sound, south of narrows which is the area open now.

I've done o.k. at the mouth of Wollochet bay, across from Fox Island.
I've done well at the mouth of Oro bay, on the south end of Anderson.
I've done well of the nisqually wildlife refuge...but beware of terrible currents. In fact, I lost two pots there yesterday, one got dragged on the bottom and hooked on something. Snapped my line trying to break loose and the other just simply went away. There's a pretty big shelf there and if your pot is not weighted (mine wasn't) it can bounce off that shelf and head strait to the bottom.

I've crabbed up near grapeview, but its been a while and I don't remember having great success there, but I'm sure locals could tell you some spots.

FWIW, BEFORE we lost our two pots, we got pretty much skunked yesterday. Soaked for a couple hours off Oro bay and had 3-4 small dungies to throw back and one large red crab which we tossed. Spoke to several folks at the yacht club this a.m and didn't find anyone who did worth a dam.

We just got our boat two weeks ago! We can't wait for crab season to start up here in the North Sound! :)
