Well, we normally do well on the first day but seems the tribes worked the area over pretty good the past month. After two pulls with four traps, we got two large dungees and two rock crab. While waiting for the soak, I trolled for salmon. Got a springer at 100' in front of the fuel piers at Manchester, WA in 175' of water using a pink Sonic Edge with barrel swivel between the spoon and the hook.Had surf and surf for dinner...

We did pretty well today- 13 dungies, 1 pull of 4 pots, 2 hours soak by Indianola. Great day on the water!

Thanks Pete. We need to find a better place to crab and that is as close as it gets. How deep were you crabbing?

We were in 60 ft +/- by the park west of Jeff Head. We've always done well there.

Something interesting- we didn't have any salmon for bait, so we tried turkey legs and necks.

legs- excellent bait!
necks- nada except for starfish.....

We went out at the state park (Camano Island). We dropped our traps and went back home. Went to Costco, when we returned about 7 hours later we pulled our traps one had the door held open with the strap. One had 2 females with all of the bait gone and the last trap had 4 nice males again most of the bait gone. I suspect we had a few “courtesy Checks”.

They've been pretty picked over by the tribes and commercial guys. With the new split rules in effect, they've really worked hard to get the numbers they've been apportioned. I got 8 dungies and a rock Monday, but it took several pulls. We're gonna have to work for them this year. :)

I wondered about this. Getting our allotment increased like we did looks great on paper, but that paper is only good for wiping with if there aren't any crab left. I've got a few holes where the terrain is a bit technical and it doesn't get carpet bombed with native pots, but the regular spots are fished out even on the opener. The crab were there.....lots of them, 4 pulls of 6 pots, must have sorted thru 300+ undersize and females, but only to put 16 keepers in the cooler. Didn't bother going there last year.

Are there any places that the commercial boats are not allowed to go?
I hope my spots aren't cleaned out when area 7 opens.

We dropped a string of 8 pots at around 7:00 and gave them a 3 hour soak and got 11 nice keepers. Re-set them and soaked another 4 hours for a total of 21 crab. So, for a total of 16 pulls we got 21 for an average of less than two per pot.

It's definitely slower than years past, but I also think there are a LOT more people crabbing as well. Hundreds of crab pots. Some 18' boats had stacks of 10 pots on them and looked more like tribal boats than sport crabbers. :)

We caught one limit yesterday in the Northern part of 8-1. All larger crabs, no barely legals! Lots of boats and pots out.

Out of Pleasant Harbor, head south to the land jutting out a bit. Its about a mile out of PH. Good crabbing there. Last time we went we also did well straight out from PH and to the north near the tip of Dabob Bay. We did poorly in front of and just outside of PH...

Crabbed out of Pleasant Harbor this past weekend. Fished 4 pots over 4 days, overnight soaks, halibut bait, herring, shad, the works. With four licenses, only two of the four days did we even get one limit of dungies, got a total of 21 dungies in 4 days. Dismal in my humble opinion and we worked hard. Lots of sitting on our pots, lots of bait, and fished from 7am to 7pm each day. Fished all around PH, including near the southern point, out towards Seabeck, north of the marina and across the canal near the Navy testing areas. Disappointing results but a ton of fun :) Going back to PH this weekend for more!

Yeah more or less ;) I figure if we had fun and want to go back, even if the crabbing sucked, why not? The weather was amazing, the water is beautiful and the area is gorgeous. There are only so many weekends in the PNW where weather is perfect on the water for fishing of any type.
