After driving through pouring rain, we arrived at Point Hudson around 8pm on Thursday, we headed to Doc's for dinner and then bed. On Friday we lost $100+ in gear due to snags, one of our new halibut reels decided to lock up after being tested two days prior, and lost 300 feet of line on one of our salmon rods, leaving us with only one halibut setup, one halibut rod + salmon reel, and a salmon setup with 100 feet of line. Saturday faired better in that we didn't lose any gear plus we saved a boat from the rock wall jetty at Boat Haven due to them losing their engine. In the crews first rescue effort, we were able to raft them to our boat and drove them in reverse to the dock, pretty exciting and everyone did a great job in keeping calm under pressure.Sunday, after an already long weekend, we were hoping for some good fortune even with the massive tides and currents. The admiral decided she was bored enough to fish with the 100 feet of line salmon rig off the bow. While teaching her son how to mooch, she yells "I think I've got one!". After a few seconds of watching her rod bend straight down I realized she was right. "Start the boat, I'm at my backing!", I hear from the bow. I fire up the boat and start chasing her line. After 15 minutes she gets the fish up to the port side bow and sure enough, it's a halibut! I harpoon it and thankfully it didn't run, so I gaffed it attempting to lift it over the bow railing. Oh man, this thing is heavier than I thought... I have my daughter use the second gaff and we're able to pull it onto the bow then drag it through the window onto the deck.58lbs of halibut on board and our boats first keeper fish of any kind!

Lots of nice butts on this thread, way to go! I hear up at my northern stomping grounds the commercial guys are having a great year on halibut. Boats are coming in with a weekly average between 15,000 - 20,000 #s The girl I know at the fish processing plant says there a lot of big smiles. They also had a good run of Chinook already with the largest coming in at 54#s but 30-40 was not uncommon.

I fish in Prince William's Sound where there are "no fish". At least that is what I hear others say. 2/ day halibut, no size limit. Shrimp from April 15th to Sept 15th, 5 pots which can be in the water the entire time...no limit on shrimp/prawns.

Getting ready for my annual 3 week trip up to the Haida Gwaii this year and I see they have changed the halibut rules (for the better) and I will never be able to better my catch of 180# halibut landed in the boat now. This year we are only allowed 2-possession which; one can be up to 49" with head on and the other can then only be 36" head on. You can not have two over 36". The only problem is they don't put these length rules in for commercial fishermen and these are the guys cleaning all the breeders out not the sport fishermen. Sorry small rant. They also make it mandatory to write down all halibut, cod and spring salmon caught this year. They are really trying to step up tracking what's going on with the fishing. I guess the only problem I have with the halibut rules; how am I going to measure it before I get it in the boat. LOL

Good luck this year.:arr Is it legal to boat a halibut for measurement or are you expected to measure while they are still in the water? Either way it's likely to be a problem. Do me a favor and if you are not too busy trying to avoid taking a beating, take some video of the how you end up doing it.:D

Not supposed to boat to measure. My brother in-law is bringing a video camera this year so I may come back with a bit of incriminating evidence.

Great! Can't wait to at least hear how you managed measuring a Halibut that hasn't been bonked or shot.
