got tired of looking at our wheelhouse and decided to do a minor upgrade by replacing the decking and dash bolster. we used Lonseal teak and holly on the deck and then decided to use Goncalco Alves (Tigerwood) for the dash bolster since it was less expensive than teak but has a color and grain design that lends itself well to blending with the original aged teak trim.

We first removed the vinyl bolster by simply prying it off the dash as it is simply held on with plastic auto body pins, and then took our measurements and angles off the underlying dash face.

We milled and fit the tigerwood in my shop and then did the final fitting, plugging, and finish on the boat. We finished the trim by first sealing all surfaces with two coats of waxless shellac then three coats of rubbed gloss poly applied with a cloth pad.
I milled out a 1/4"x5/8" rabbit in the back of the lower edge of the bolster and fitted it with red LED's for night deck lighting to help reduce the trip hazard caused by the 4" step that Bayliner designed into the after bridge deck of the 45.

Here are the progress photos

What a difference. Makes me long for a pilothouse. :(
