Just completed a restoration and repower on my 1994 Bayliner 1950 Capri CL project boat. Replaced frost damaged 3.0 Litre Mercruiser with a 2005 5.0 Litre V8 Vortec. Also replaced all the floor, engine box, seat boxes, stringers, bulkheads, transom, chin filletes, and under fuel tank panels. And installed wakeboard tower.

That is a very clean install. Did you have to make the engine box bigger?
That sucker flies!
And now you have the equivalent of a brand new boat done right.

58.5 MPH....WOW!! That is fast. I assume that was at WOT and only for as long as it took to hit max speed.....and on flat calm water. How did the stability of the boat feel ? Would you consider making a turn at that speed?
What is your comfortable cruising speed?

I had a 17' Whaler with a 115 HP Merc on it, It was fast. My top speed (with just me and a life jacket on board) was 62 MPH. The hull was only rated for 50 MPH. At 62 the pucker factor was huge. It liked to chine walk at about 55 if there was so much as a ripple on the water. Needless to say, I didn't run it that fast very often......but I couldn't help putting the jet boaters in their place every once in a while. The real benefit of having all that power was pulling skiers. It could pop two slalom skiers out with no problem.

Defiantly on flat water, but surprisingly stable and very manageable in hard turns, no chin walk either, lots of trim is needed or it tries to bury the bow. On calm water I will cruise at 40 MPH @ 3200 RPM with 4 of use on board. I was skeptical about this hull as it is used with small power only, but am very happy with its performance as we like to wakeboard, ski and barefoot. This engine I’m using was originally in a Bravo application, so it has the rev limiter built into the control module. ( not changing it, big $) Just looking for a good hole shot with good all round performance, running a stainless 21 pitch Vengeance with 1.5:1 gears. We have a small vehicle for towing the boat, that is why I started this project, light boat with big power, it works for me and the wife is happy we don’t have to buy a new vehicle. Some pics of engine box mode, it is 4" wider (less 2" out of each jump seat) and 4" longer, fuel tank was moved 4" forward and yes ski locker was moved 4" forward.

Wow! Good work. Did you do the fuel tank while the engine was out as well? I did a ton of work on my old boat, only to have the tank fail a year after doing the motor. Mind you, it was 8 years older.

Fuel tank went right back in after pressure test and polish, it was always a freshwater boat and the tank had proper venting around it, they at least got that right.

Great work on this mark. Was just wondering if the facing that encloses the battery area is permanent or temp?

Also - any idea how thick the floatation box in the corner is? It looks about 6 inches.

Ryan- The corner boxes measure 7” out from the top and are 31” from the transom. Rear seat back rests are held in with two screws on top hidden in the corner folds and two screws on bottom going into elevated battery tray. Hope that helps.

4.3 1950 almost 50MPH,
5.0 1950 almost 60MPH,
Wonder what 5.7 1950 would do...almost 70MPH ;)

Actually I do have a 7.4 Crusader (350 HP) kicking around, little mod I could get it to fit, don’t know how long the drive would last. Custom gears 80 MPH?
