These are the "before" pictures. It is still very much a work in progress, but progress has been made.

The Battery shelf was lousy with dry rot. It has been replaced with new wood and re-fiberglassed. The blower and lines have been replaced. The new gauges for the dash come in tomorrow, and the old removed. Going for a total re-wire of the boat.

I have new material to re-cover and re-do the interior. Good bye orange! The side windows had pretty good leaks. They have been re-moved, re-sealed and re-placed. All water tight now.

Good luck with your restore. I think the Saratoga is a sweet boat and has a pretty decent ride for a narrow beam boat. Only difference between the two is mine has a Volvo-Penta 225 with an AQ 280 outdrive.

Hi,

I recently had the same issues to deal with. I thought you might like to see what I did for seats and a cabin door.

I just bought some inexpensive seats from Veada and made my own cabin door. I used clear cedar with a UV resitant water repellant stain. I don't have before pictures but lets say it looks 100% better now.

Couldn't resist throwing in a pic of my first mate.

Good luck with your project.

The new panels and switches. It looks better in real life without the spots that show in the picture for some reason. Just need to trim it out on the bottom and clean things up a bit more!

Other than the changes in 1980 and model it looks like the same boat as my 79 offshore. Still wish mine had a aft cave or cabin.

Wow you lose all the rear bench seating due to the raised deck for the aft cabin. Make me wonder if I really want a aft cabin. But I do like the battery locations on your boat. Mine are tucked in to the little holes to the port and starboard areas next to the bench seat. So on the 1980 models, is the interior deck now fiberglass and not wood?

Actually it looks like there was a folding bench seat aft, but it was removed at some point. The top cover of the livewell / cooler / whatever that thing is also can be used for seating.

The entire weather deck is fiberglass, with only a bit of wood trim here and there. I rather like this as water is channeled to the aft scuppers and does not just sit there and soak in.

Yeah everything aft in my 79 is wood. Wish it was all glass. Winter project is to pull the carpet and redo the wood floor adding in some added storage in the floor area and making sure all the wood down there is glassed over.

So I'm working on the boat this weekend and then it starts to rain, I mean really rain. The good news all of the prior leaks that I identifed and fixed are indeed watertight. The bad news found two new leaks. Both eminating from the after amidships rub rails, and leaking into the bilge. Something else to add to the list I guess. Now if this rain would stop I could get back to work on the boat. Between the day job and the weather this could take a while!

My '78 Saratoga has the aft cabin. The motor hatch takes up the whole cockpit area. I was trying to figure out a way to put seating back there and a buddy of mine suggested building stowage under the motor hatch for a fold up table and chairs. Works out great while docked or on the hook.;)

The previous owner of my boat had the same idea. He had a "table" that would attach to the aft rail and a spot to store that stuff in the engine compartment. I like a lot of open space on the deck at times so this does seem like a pretty good solution.

Got the engine compartment totally re-wired. Some of the hacks in the old wireing were interesting to say the least. How about three splices (including color changes) in all the wires just from the transom to the engine! How about a bolt all wrapped up in electrical tape to tie all the ground lines together! How about wires that just simply disentigrated when you touched them!

Anyway I put new wood and glass down for the battery shelf. This was my first try at fiberglass and I have done a few other little spots in the bilge that turned out better.

More pics to follow.
