Marty, perhaps some of the senior members who regularly post should set the example. I can name a couple offhand - one with over 5000 posts and the other with more than 10000 - who don't have their details showing!

Just a thought :)

Let's just explain that a bit more.
Having location entered helps to direct people to sources of material or services or there may even be someone close by who could and is willing to help. If you are afraid of privacy simply make it wider (like State or Country).
The boat info as detailed as possible in the signature helps to answer questions as these boats are not always the same (different engines, differences with model years).

It is up to everyone to disclose or not disclose the above info but if there's nothing .....................

The same year engine and drive combo could have 3 different t-stat options, and that's for raw water cooling.

Gets more complicated, when you add half, or full fresh water, then you have heat exchangers, power steering coolers ....

I tried to update my sig to include my engine and outdrive, but for some reason it reverts back to my old sig. Must a weird iPad thing.

I believe it is the right of each member here as to how much information they put in their signatures. It is a personal choice. When I had my last boat I did have some of the information in my signature. I am currently boatless but that is not in my sig. If and when I get another boat it will be added to my signature line.

Thinking a bit more as to my location it is in my profile. Just click my member name and any BOC member can find my location. I chose not to put it is my signature.

Most of the older members know to be specific if they have a question and include what info specific to the question is necessary.
Much different than a new member asking a question many of us have seen many times before.
In my case I live in Florida and Michigan. I have more than one boat.. If I have a question I have to be specific. Big difference from a 38' MY, a 16.5 Sea Nymph, or a bow rider.
I try to answer a lot more questions than I ask. To give good answers the location of the poster tells me if he is in fresh water or salt, and if he winterizes,
There is a big difference in the answers at times. We don't need a street address or even a town so there is no risk to posting this information.
Giving the town may help if another member lives near and can direct someone to good services or maybe even lending a helping hand. One of the things BOC members do.
Knowing what kind of drives and engines also eliminates many general answers. Each drive has something different and some answers have to be specific to that equipment.
And being specific with the problem eliminates a lot of guess work. Saying my engine won't start without stating what went wrong makes a lot of posts drawing out the problem.
Just stating known facts helps get right to the problem.
Doug

How many times have you been online trying to order something or to receive information....… and the system that you're in has a notation; "**required fields"?
These fields must be filled in in order to move to the next step.

There's no reason why the BOC could not invoke something similar for use when a new member signs up.
(I have mentioned this several times over the years)
