Does this mean boc members that participate in this rating game in threads that they are not interested in so that the reputation is spread arround? Why is there not a neutral button like ebay.

Too funny! :D
This system must be patterned after California's "Outcome Based Education" system.

This raises various questions for me:

1. How did Rick get a 31 while most of us are below 5?
2. Why is Sarah only a 4?
3. Is it possible for a reputation score to go below zero?
4. Am I about to find the answer to #3 on my account?
5. Should I be able to see my current reputation on my profile page?
6. Is anybody actually working today?

Personally, I will probably be flattered if my reputation goes up and amused if it goes down.

cwiert;665760 wrote: Ok, I get that, and I will. But I'm just curious, and we now have 7 pages talking about this an no one has yet to answer the very simple question, "why?" What benefit does this serve? How does it make the site better?

The answer to why is it will display to users those who actually have reputible answers, like rick for example with all his help with issues that people have compaired to some random person posting "oh its ok to do this to your motor". It can also weed out those that troll and post mindless bullcrap all day. People can look at that user and see a rep of 1 and decide, oh why would I trust that guys solution over ricks who knows what hes talking about.

It takes time to build up and work properly, give it time. This is a VERY common feature found on many forums. Before you guys poo poo all over something, why dont you give it a shot and see how it works over time before throwing a fit with 8 pages of posts before it has even had a chance. seriously..

Everytime we make a change to the site, a post is made and complaints are filed, emailed, called, etc. Sorry guys but its not going anywhere, if you dont like it, then its up to you to disable it.

Can you please explain how to disable it? I do not see it anywhere under my settings. I would be perfectly happy to personally disable this mod if I knew where to do so. Thanks!!

Ryan, I have to agree.... it sounds only fair that we give it some time to prove or disprove itself.
I'm still doubtful, however, especially after the message that Dean got when he tried to leave one for me.... hence my California reference.

Very fair and good question!
I was at 30 or 31 right out of the gate. I too am very flattered, but perhaps explain this to us.

I do, however, like all the other changes that the site has seen in recent months.

I don't think that we can assume that we are talking about a simple popularity contest. If we use it properly, then I agree with Ryan that it can be a valuable feature. Newer members need some mechanism to recognize which other members have a history of giving good advice.

Just because someone has a rep of 1 does not make the person unreliable or inept, and that is what killed the "other" forum that started this nonsense. EVERYTHING turned into a pissing contest and anyone but the top 10 stopped posting. I want no part of another forum that forces this nonsense on it's members. I have seen personally the damage that it causes and the huge DROP in shared information because of it. On top of all that, we cannot disable it, and the admins are refusing to do so for us - that tells me that I can either use it or go get F&^%$D, and I don't appreciate the new mentality at all.

Sure it does, I will be using it for that. This will in no way kill boc, that statement makes me chuckle a bit but thanks for the opinion. Again I will look into why you cant disable it, and get it fixed so you can disable it as i previously said. There is no refusal to fix it, so please feel free to keep those lies to yourself.

I would recommend you step away, have a cup of tea and relax. You seem extra agitated for no reason. I am sure you have plenty of things in your life to get yourself far more worked up about, is it still winter here or something?

I'm confused, so are you saying a low rep means that the poster is inept? If so got to disagree with you there. Extremely knowledgeable posters that don't post much will not get big rep. I don't care either way on this system, I have been on here long enough to see who is what. To be honest I can't think of a single poster that is completely full of BS. Alot of good people here, thats why I enjoy coming here. I follow a heck of alot of forums.

Like I said guys, give it a chance please. If you dont want it, thats your call, I am aware its not working and I will get it fixed. Theres really no reason to get all worked up about something so trivial.

Theres far other things in life to get so upset over, this is not one of them.

When the Reputation Power feature was turned on, everybody's Reputation Level was automatically scaled up proportional to post count. The software did all of this without any intervention by Ryan or Doug. And so far there are very few people clicking on the Rep star down in the lower left corner of your screen.

I know of one rep level as high as 41. It stems from post count, not true reputation. For now. That will change over time.

Using me as an example, I have made 8,406 posts. the software distinguishes between Rep Level and Rep Power. My displayed Rep Power is 15. My reputation level shown in the software is 29. I have received 3 comments by people clicking on the star. I can see who these comments are from (because I have some Mod powers) but I can't see whether they were positive or negative.

Given enough time, reputation levels will begin to show who is seen as posting good info and who is seen as posting bad info. The stuff that is neither good nor bad will not make any difference. Nobody will bother to click the rep star.

Those who post a lot are likely to gather more clicks on their reps because they present more targets. The hits may cause their rep to go up OR down, depending on what they have to say and how we all receive it.

In short - don't worry about the sub-system at work here. Post what you want, when you want, and continue to try to be correct/accurate. And keep in mind that somebody might rely on the info you provide.
