Yeah, you're right. My green thing is gone too. I didn't notice that at first. Rep Power is still there, though.

I'd like to offer some facts... in the hope that facts help quell some of the emotion. I'm purposely steering clear of opinion.

.
.
  1. Rep Power is not a concern for everybody
  2. Not everybody who's active on BOC will see this thread or even notice the Rep Power feature. Not everybody who notices will speak up, either for it, or against.
  3. Of the 3,587 active members on BOC, 42 people have spoken up in this thread. About 1/3 of those are positive or non-commital.
  4. That means less than 1% of the BOC active membership has voiced a strong negative opinion. (so far)
  5. BOC is not a democracy. Refer to the rules of participation . Pay particular attention to the part where it says, "All of the above is at the sole discretion of the BOC administrators and is not open to debate." It is like a sole-proprietorship. We as members can decide if we want to do business here, or not. If we don't like the way the business is run, we get to vote with our feet.
  6. There's nothing wrong with speaking up - voicing an opinion - as long as nobody forgets the point above. This is not a democracy.
  7. The vBulletin software permits members to turn off their rep power ratings. Ryan has stated here more than once that he will correct the glitch that is presently preventing members from from turning it off.
  8. Once Ryan finds the fix, the system will let those who like it to use it, and those who don't can ignore it.

EDIT: Ryan fixed the problem while I was typing this. Here

Thanks for fixing the on/off feature for displaying/hiding reputation points.

There may still be a bug. On my Settings it shows I have: "(35 point(s) total)" but my Rep Power is only 4.

There are anonymous statements in my column of Latest Reputation Received. Are these only visible to me? Are these intended to be anonymous?

I don't have any reputation at all, which my ex-mother in law would say is a huge step up for me.

I see a couple of problems with this system; The first, as someone mentioned earlier, is the word "Reputation." To most people I know, a person's reputation is very important to them and the individual emotional power of that word doesn't change based on the nature of the site. Businesses succeed or fail based on that one word.

The central question is this: Does the number displayed actually reflect what it is supposed to reflect? Which, in this case, is skill and knowledge.

I don't think that this system is, or ever could be, a valid system of measurement of the knowledge or skills of the poster. I always read Rick's posts because you can learn just from his offhand comments, he should have a high number. But what about someone who might know more than Rick (just an example Rick, I know it's impossible), but only posts once a month? His rating would be 0 simply because he doesn't post enough to get a lot of bumps, even though his knowledge and skill level might be very high. His posts might be solid gold, but there is no way he will ever get a "Reputation Number" higher than mine. And we can all see what my reputation is!

I agree with MikeRoss completely, btw. I think a name change would help, but it is what it is, we'll all just have to learn to ignore it, or deal with it and feel super insecure about ourselves. :sorrow:

This has got to be the longest Club and Website thread.....ever? lol

IMO, yes, I find the system odd. It's definitions and implementation even more so. Maybe a "heads up" thread would have been better than the membership WTH? thread this has derailed into.

I turned it off. I don't know if that finally worked. I can still see it.

I think that a little notice and a full explanation as to how this rating system works prior to it's implemation; also as one member stated, there are some subjects that have nothing to do with the rating systems intent, a chance for a little feedback from the members would also have gone a long way to having a smoother transition into it.
I suspect this is is just another program from the software provider and not enough wiggle room to solve a number of issues that have come up.
That being said: I still do not think that we need this rating program, we have done quite well with-out it.

Collect all the feedback, list all of the issues other than personal likes and dislikes and see what we all pretty much agree on that is wrong with being rated.
A member that has one area of expertise may only comment a few times a month, that member will not have a very high rating, but may have the perfect sollution to the issue, with a low number the OP of the thread may take advise that comes from someone that is not quite as correct so-to-speak, this has been mentioned in this thread.
If your going to keep it, tweek the program to fit. There are too many flaws as is.

As a thread develops we usually come up with a good solution, who or how many get the credit? This is a community that works together to solve many issues, rarely do we not solve an issue, usually because we do not have enough info from the OP.

Like I said at this point and time I really don't give a hoot. You can give it time but based on the posts here most of those posting are against the rating system. I would like to see posts from all those you say are for the system. They should post their thoughts here so we can all see the other side of the issue.
