It can also weed out those that troll and post mindless bullcrap all day. People can look at that user and see a rep of 1 and decide, oh why would I trust that guys solution over ricks who knows what hes talking about.

It takes time to build up and work properly, give it time. This is a VERY common feature found on many forums. Before you guys poo poo all over something, why dont you give it a shot and see how it works over time before throwing a fit with 8 pages of posts before it has even had a chance. seriously..

LOL this is the most hillarious goup of posts I have seen ! :D This is begining to rival some of the nonsense posted in the Political Forum
Guys and Gal its just a little star and a point system that can be given and taken away from posters. If the little star is going to make or break BOC then there are bigger underlying issues. Give it a chance, ignore it, remove it from your profile but for gods sake get over it LOL :D Y'all sound like a bunch of crotchety old people who just had their favorite morning cereal taken off the market :oops

What we had works just fine, when I started here there was some issues with a small few members, I even was chastised, members of a web site like this should be able to control some actions of it's moderators, I wonder why this was not presented to the members for input? Why can a membership club like this have a controling member be able to just do what he or she desires and let us be stuck with it, why were we not informed of this change prior to it's implimentation?

I know I may be hyper sensitive right now, but this was the one site that I visit religiously every day, and now I see this rating system, popularity contest, whatever you call it and it makes me frustrated. The site was 100% PERFECT and change is not always good as others have pointed out. I also have never seen Ryan come down on someone so hard since I started to visit here. He was always very helpful to me, and I owe him a lot for his sharing of experience. The posts from the leader team have become much more strict and resolute as of late. The feeling of family and the feeling of being part of something that was purely here to help people has become something else in my eyes, and I understand that it is only my opinion but my opinion used to be enough without fear of repercussions. To have senior members be so blunt really surprised me, and I actually feel that it takes away from the experience that I so much enjoy here.

I don't care either way if the system stays in place or not to be honest, but the "feeling" of the site has changed for me, and I no longer feel like I am a welcomed member anymore.

I am sure Ryan was feeling some frustration at what appears to be a mass uprising. Change may or may not be good and it is always difficult! Communications via this medium (text) makes things even more difficult as you cannot see body language, hear voice inflections ect so things are taken out of context on all sides. I too have seen some changes on this site since I have joined, felt some frustration but in the end even though I have started my own sites think BOC provides not only a valuable resource for boaters but some entertainment and opportunities for meeting other like minded people.
Running a web sit is a difficult task especially if you do it for free and for no other reason but to bring other like minded people together to share ideas. I would suggest that while this site is going through some new growing pains that in time the changes that are planned and have occured may make this site a better one.

However if it does not you can always visit us in Canada :kidding Give it some time and see where the changes go, you may be suprised!

Never feel that you are not welcome here, we are trying to get rid of the I am better than your are rating system that is being forced on us, please stay, I am sure that others will agree that you should stay if that is your choice; that being said; you could just lay back and see where this goes, I am not going away, I like the way it was working prior to being rated!!!!!!

I still dont think members here are being rated, but there is obviously some concern here and maybe some poorly communicated intentions.
As Ryan pointed out this feature is available on almost all forums in some form or another. I have it installed on my site but it is called Karma and is more of a pat on the back for good information, a kind word , a great picture whatever. It is not meant to rate members and I am sure it is not meant as such here. Would it make a difference if the name of the system was different Karma, Good Deeds vs Rating ?

Maybe I have made too light of the members concerns here so I have posted the same question on my site to see if my membership has the same concerns however Karma has always been on my site and is not a new feature. I will post back the results of " Mutiny on the BOC" :D to see if the concerns are the same

DING DING DING!!! We have a winner!

This feature is common on many boards; it's used as feedback for sales transactions (similar to eBay), and also as a "thank you" for technical information or assistance given. The bottom line is that not that big a thing- some BOCers are making Mount Everest out of a molehill. Please stop spreading dissent- there's no reason to do so. This site remains a great resource for us Bayliner owners, and will continue to evolve, grow, and get better.

There's no need to do this, nor spread animosity over such a little thing.

I'll bet your question about the rating system on your other site returns answers like "no big thing", "why are they complaining" etc.......

1. Sarah, you still have 2 green thingies. :)
2. As a marketing guy, maybe it is as simple as the name of this new feature. Rep power is a strong name. No one wants to have low rep power. It implies weakness, it implies you and your suggestions aren't as good as the other guy or gals. In short, it sucks. But good will, or good karma, that's a different story. Doing that achieves the same thing without putting some people on a pedestal and others in a ditch. Just my $0.02.
3. If no one likes it and no BOC Big Wigs want to change it, then we just shouldnt use it. Ever. That will make the whole thing pretty useless in the long run anyway.
4. Apparently we all just need to get our boats in the water ASAP!!!

I am backing a decision made by the entire admin/moderation team. We are asking the membership to work with us and give this system a shot before slamming it down. Everyone is welcome here, I am sorry you feel that way but that was not my intention. Sometimes the hardest part of this job, is I have to be the bad guy....

It has been said that you are only as big as the smallest thing that drives you crazy. Folks, some of you are being driven completely around the bend by something that is really small.

My rating could stay at three for a long time. That is OK with me. If I say something really dumb, my feelings won't be hurt if I get a bunch of negative votes any my rep score plunges. I will be hurt if someone forgets the basic rules of civility and replies with personal insults.

My rule for the ratings is simple: I will give positives to posts that I like and are helpful. I will only give negatives to posts that are highly uncivil or 100% factually incorrect.

Oh, Great. Sarah! We're gonna need more popcorn!

It appears that the initial scores are based on a simple count of prior posts. Going forward, the little star in lower left corner is somehow involved. Personally, I am hoping the admins can include some sort of random number function, just to keep everyone guessing.

As you will notice, the system is not perfect. For example, Sarah is a 4. I am a 3. This needs to change.

No wonder you have sooooo many points! You should be at least 1000 in my book!

I predict that the rep point system will (and in no particular order)

- confuse many
- be ignored by most
- be helpful to almost nobody
- aggravate a large number of BOC'rs
- drive the poor mods absolutely outta their collective minds listening to us tell 'em how utterly assinine the thing is
- have an overall negative effect on the mood of the forum, unless it is turned off

I suggest that as soon as Ryan or Doug figure out how to squash the system that we all turn it OFF,,,,and live happily ever after.

Just sayin' ;)

I agree...and quite honestly couldn't care less about it, I'll be ignoring it and won't change the way I post or respond to posts.

Well said, Sarah

Some things don't need to be done Ryan. Just my opinion. I will freely admit I am an Ahole at times. I don't need or want a rating system. This just doesn't need to be here. We all have our spots we go to. We participate if we feel like it. I have no clue how to rate someone, nor do I care.

Yes, it's just a tiny little annoying detail in my life, I'm not going to jump off a building and this isn't going to ruin my life, but I don't like it and I'll do my best to ignore it -- I just don't know why the admin and mods of this site couldn't just leave well enough alone. I learn the credibility of different posters by my experiences with them and reading the responses over time. This was a solution looking for a problem. Really unecessary, causing lots of fireworks for absolutely no good reason.
