So it's based on quantity not quality. That is disturbing.

Thunder;665803 wrote: so are you saying a low rep means that the poster is inept?

No. Rep is currently linked to post count. And we all know that number of posts does noes NOT indicate relative knowledge, experience, power or wealth. A high number of posts means you've posted a lot.

Thunder;665803 wrote: If so got to disagree with you there. Extremely knowledgeable posters that don't post much will not get big rep.

Agreed. However a truely valuable single post by an infrequent poster could garner thousands of positive rep hits, if everybody agrees that it's really and truely valuable.

My Rep Power was 4, then I posted this reply now I'm zero.

Can this go negative?

I'd like a very large Rep Power, but I don't like anyone here. Are there any suggestions?

I believe that Doug McBurney has the highest post count.
I just looked at his Rep Power.

So if we're going to borrow any R/P numbers, let's get them from Doug. :D

I don't know that anyone is saying that. A high reputation can be seen as a evidence of competence, but a low reputation doesn't necessarily prove incompetence. Someone smarter than me can probably explain this in terms of logic, and in Latin.

Here is an example of why I think this rep system can be helpful. Suppose a new member starts a thread and asked how often he really needs to change his impeller. I, with a reputation of 3, tell him that I think every three years is fine. Rick, with a reputation of 31, tells says he should usually change it every year, and never wait more than two years. I would certainly expect the new member to listen to Rick.

Personally, I would be surprised if my own reputation ever goes above 5. On the other hand, I will need some time to get used to the idea that Rick is 15 times more awesome than me.

It would be true... *IF* people give reps based on how useful the posts are. Suppose there is another member who gets dozens of reps, more than Rick's 31, because he posts hundreds of hilarious jokes and funny pics in the DockWalk. Would his opinion on impellers be more valuable than Rick's?

The reputation system only works if everybody (or at least most) do it in the same way.

Yes, and if you don't mind, I'd like a Coke also.

What if.... just say'n.... what if;

Bubba starts a new thread and asks a question regarding his GarMarine X-2765 Zilgeaser GPS interfacing with his new Zoomfroid Radar unit.
He wants to know which wire connects to terminal #2.

Allen, John and Gary, all with under a 9 R/P count, suggest that the Turtle Shell colored wire connects to #2.

Rick comes in with a higher R/P number, and suggest that the Monkey Fur colored wire connects to #2.

Bubba looks at Rick's R/P count and says.... wow, this guy must know what he's talking about, and goes with the Monkey colored wire.

Bubba connects the wires, then fires up his system.... and poof....

In retrospect, Allen, John and Gary gave the correct suggestion.

Now of course we all know that there's no such thing as a X-2765 Zilgeaser... it's actually a X-2765 ZilFaser.

Hey Rick
How didja get a pic of me connecting my battery last weekend? :D
No wonder you have sooooo many points! You should be at least 1000 in my book!

I predict that the rep point system will (and in no particular order)

- confuse many
- be ignored by most
- be helpful to almost nobody
- aggravate a large number of BOC'rs
- drive the poor mods absolutely outta their collective minds listening to us tell 'em how utterly assinine the thing is
- have an overall negative effect on the mood of the forum, unless it is turned off

I suggest that as soon as Ryan or Doug figure out how to squash the system that we all turn it OFF,,,,and live happily ever after.

Just sayin' ;)

Yes I am, we will not disable this feature across the board. WE WILL however ensure you can disable it on your end. Period, end of discussion. I guess my nerve is high, I dont have time to deal with childish behavior, i do work for a living, this forum isnt my life.

If you would like to furhter discuss this with me, PM me and do not polute the post. We have identified 2 areas that may be causing issues, I will work on resolving this, free of charge on my own time even though what I do is completely and utterly unacceptable to you, your welcome.

That is why we are asking for patience from the members, we need to see how it will do. Give it time. Guys dont be so quick to slam down something before giving it a chance.

I still want to know why Sarah has two green things and nobody else does. I also want to know why I asked this in my previous post and it got deleted. It would also be interesting to know how I've made it 4 years on this site without blowing myself up because I didn't know if advice or members were "reputable" or not. To hell with this, I'm sure I will get no answers. I'm going boating...:prod
