Woke up to strong Santa Ana winds, but called Avalon harbor patrol and they noted just a slight breeze. NOAA had a small craft advisory in effect til 2pm, so we ventured out of Huntington Harbor prepared to turn right back if the chop was uncomfortable. Nothing too severe, and 8 miles offshore the chop settled down to nothing and the ride was smooth. Here's a shot of the island about 12 miles out. Beautiful clarity!

Got to Avalon and found the harbor empty-- a nice change from the weekend zoo you find in Summertime! Got a nice mooring in front of the yacht club, as they were filling up the rear slots on the Casino side in case of the winds kicking up. Apparently they had 2 red flags flying the previous Sunday, even cancelled the Catalina Express service for the day! Grabbed the mooring, dropped the dinghy and took the gals and the dog to shore. Went back and grabbed my gear and went to the Dive park in front of the casino for a dive. Here's a view from the dive park, no boats moored in front of Descanso Beach that day!

Got back to boat around 3pm and saw what I thought were storm clouds rolling in. Turns out a lot of the Southland had caught fire! When we left the fires were up in the Santa Barbara area, but a lot of inland OC was now blazing! Terrible news--we went ashore and watched a few newscasts to follow the fires. Went back to the boat to have dinner and watch movies, it was a pretty calm night. Here's a view of our ride with the Casino in the background.

Woke up Sunday and it was absolutely still. No breeze at all and the temperature was aorund 82 degrees by 9am! I'll tell you, it was a bittersweet journey home as we headed directly into the dark smoke hanging over the mainland. Ah well, back to reality! Cheers-

I don't mean to sound like such a midwestern dumb a$$ but that's the pacific? Do you have more pictures? I'd love to get my boat out there someday. Hopefully gas will settle back down to a buck 50 and we can all start traveling again!

Great pictures!

Very nice! Sunday was a beautiful day. Wind was incredible calm. We ran from Newport up to the Yardhouse and messed around trying to dial in a newly rebuilt outdrive. Long Beach was a smoke box, but Newport was just gorgeous.

Do you stop in at the Yard house and watch any football? That place gets pretty packed on Sundays......

Mike,

I think we are going to hit Avalon this time. We are going with my neighbor who has a 39 silverton and his Admiral likes the shopping at Avalon... If you do head over let me know we allways have a large cooler full of Brews!!!

Yeah, I stop by every now and again on a Sunday afternoon for lunch. It does get very busy. Been to Parker's Lighthouse for brunch? The food is mediocre, but the view is irreplaceable!

Re: Yardhouse/Parkers: I try to get over there for lunch now and again, only to find the guest docks out front filled, and a waiting flotilla circling like buzzards....back to Los Alamitos and McKennas for us! Looks like they finally opened up the guest docking in front of Yardhouse again though.

Where in Seal Beach are you? Old Town, The Hill or College Park?
