Hello all,

I just recently purchased a 1986 bayliner Capri 2150 with an Inboard/outboard. I started the engine yesterday and let it run for a little while before getting it into the water for the first time in a few days... this is my first boat and I am learning a lot along the way. Today I noticed that there was fuel leaking from the gas cap and under the leg. Anyone have an explanation for this? I have read that it could be the gas expanding but the tank is reading half full... also the boat is angled back toward the stern. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

None of this makes sense. The gas cap is leaking? Under the leg? So the fuel is coming out from the outdrive?

Need more info. WAY more info. And possibly pictures.

It is leaking from the gas cap. When I take the gas cap off gas poured out. It is also leaking under the outboard.

There should be a fuel vent on the stern, outside. It has a fine mesh screen and can get corroded or clogged with bug nest material. Easy to remove and clean or replace. Also, check the fuel fill hose, mine failed after 17 years. Be sure to flush the fuel with a lot of water, it's very volatile.

Sounds like a plugged vent as others have said. Was it warm the day you ran it? You may also have a stuck fuel sender causing a bad read on your fuel level.

Interesting.

First of all, you have a Ciera, not a Capri. It's a 2150 Ciera. Not that it makes a HUGE difference, but the layout is different.

Secondly. agreed you likely have a vent issue. But the fuel dripping out of the drain hole under the outdrive is also cause for concern. I would try to see if you can get in the engine compartment and see where the tank is leaking from.

In a Capri (a bowrider), the fuel tank would not be as visible. In a Ciera, you should easily see the tank. It is the aluminum tank immediately in front of the engine, which means you should see if there is an external leak from a hose or a fitting.

If you cannot find the leak, then the tank itself is likely shot.

In other words, you might have 2 issues - the vent block issue, and the tank leaking issue.

You are correct. All my paperwork says Capri and I didn't even think twice about it. Right on side of the boat along the glass it Says ciera. It's hard to even get to the gas tank... I can definitely see it. I am going to check all the hoses now. As for the screen, where is that? Again, bare with me as this is my first boat..

I just checked the hoses and I don't see any leaks... I checked the hose going into the tank from the gas cap and also the hose coming out of the tank to the engine. Everything seems right and secure. There hasn't been any other leaks or even smell of gas... could it have been a fluke thing on a warm day?

+1 there is a third hose from the tank that leads to a vent fitting mounted through the hull. It'll be a 5/8 diameter rubber hose leading to the fitting that wgander posted.

I agree that the fuel cap issue is related to a clogged vent.

Fuel coming out of the drain plug means there's fuel in the bilge. This can be a very dangerous situation as it could lead to a fire. Make 100% sure that you do not have fuel leaking into the bilge before you use the boat again.

On the Cieras, the vent should be immediately below or near the fuel filler on the transom. It will have the small chrome fitting linked above. It;s simple, just trace hoses to the transom. ALSO - consider replacing all fuel hoses at this point. They are nearing 30 years old.

I agree with Norton....fuel in the bilge is dangerous, and serious.

I would consider pressure testing the fuel tank at this point to see if it's leaking. If it is, the tank needs to be R/R'd..it's a big job,

Also, quick edit, something's wierd with your outdrive. THe upper unit says "290 Power Trim", but you do not have the 290 Power Trim transom shield. It looks like someone replaced the upper unit of the outdrive with one from a 290. Not a problem per se, since VPs interchange with quite a few years, but it could be a point of suspicion if you get the boat on the water and it doesn't perform right.

Yup that's a vent fitting. Not sure if you have a water tank or holding tank because those will be vented with that type of fitting also.

Yes it's saltwater.

I do not believe this is clogged like everyone is saying. When I had the gas leak there was gas coming out of here as well.

Fuel will come out of that fitting when you brim the fuel tank off, and vacuum will make it do weird things too.

However, given that, and what you said about it being a 30 year old saltwater boat, the next culprit of suspicion is not good news. Your aluminum gas tank is likely leaking raw fuel into the bilge. When you raise your engine hatch, do you smell raw gas in the engine compartment?

You need to pressurize the fuel tank and see if it leaks. If it does, you have a decision to make. You will need to tear out the fuel tank and replace it. There are how-to's here on BOC, but in short you have two options - cut the aft cabin floor up and bring it out through the cabin, or pull the engine and bring it out through the engine compartment.

Either of these opens up a "while you are in there..." can of worms, like check the stringers and transom for solidity and no water intrusion. No use going through the trouble of replacing the fuel tank if you have rotten stringers and a rotten transom.

Regardless, and I cannot emphasize this enough: This is serious, and you need to get this fixed before you even think about starting the engine again. If you have raw gas in the bilge, one tap of the key or any spark in that area and you have a red and white Bayliner-branded molotov cocktail.

I don't smell guess when I open up the hatch... there was some dirty water at the bottom that I cleaned out and drained completely. I am going to wait a few days and see if I smell or see any gas leaking in the bilge. As for replacing the fitting is it a matter of just ripping it off and replacing it?

Sounds like you have over filled your boat. Looking at the pictures it appears that the fuel vent is lower than the filler point.
You said the stern is down and you have had warm weather. Is it possible the warmer weather has pressurised the fuel tank.
Is the breather hose at the stern end of the fuel tank? If so then (possibly) the fuel has been forced up your breather hose and pouring the fuel down the transom?
There appears to be some white residue of fuel beneath the breather.

So each night when it gets cold the fuel cools the air is drawn back down the breather line to the tank. But since this is the lowest point on the tank - the air travels to the top of the tank (the bow). So priming it for the next day then fuel can be pushed back up the breather and if enough pressure/expansion of the fuel.

it does not take a lot of fuel to fill a small 5/8 hose vrs the volume of fuel in the tank.

Level out your boat, I think the fuel gauge is faulty - which is common.
