A couple of years ago I burnt out my starter. Long story, my fault. I replaced the starter with a new unit but have had problems with the starter when engine cold. Turn key, alarm sounds and hear a click, but no starter turning. After multiple attempts, starter turns and engine runs. I replaced the new starter with another new unit last year but no change. Cleaned all the contacts and grounds.

Wondering if I screwed up the wiring connections or something else is wrong. Can someone point me to a starter wiring picture or other ideas.

Had a similar problem with my 2008 175, or at least the symptoms were the same.
The culprit for me actually turned out to be a bad ignition switch. Replaced it ($15), and it's been fine ever since.

Sounds like a dead spot in the starter to me or bad post on the starter and damaged or loosened the connection inside. I've been through two starters on my 99 Capri. First one was a loose post second was a dead spot. Both had similar issue as you describe.

I replaced the ignition switch already and am on my third starter.

Where can I find a picture or wiring diagram for the starter wiring connections?

Ok, it was the slave solenoid that was the problem. A cheap and easy fix, once you know what the problem is. Here's a tip for those who have this problem:

Turn key and alarm sounds, hear click but starter does not turn, everything else works - try to jump the slave solenoid by using an insulated screw driver to bridge the two contacts on the solenoid. My starter turned instantly when I jumped the slave solenoid and works perfectly now that it has been replaced ($20). Look up how to jump the solenoid on YouTube. It's easy.

Could have saved myself a pile and avoided lots of aggravation and angst if I had known this.

Thanks everyone for their replies.

My 3.0 L is doing the same thing. Click, click.......jump the solenoid and it turns right over. I just ordered the solenoid I wanted to try the cheap fix first I was hoping it was not the starter. I will let you know how it turns out. Thanks for the post.

Same problem, just click click. Then after a while the engine starts. Not easy to find the real problem. Could be more than one.

To avoide problems this season I change:
- start engine (with solenoid)
- start relay
- cable and connectors between start relay and solenoid
- ignition switch

Now it work perfect!

We also had this start problem on our 2016 175, at the first start each time out it would click at the first few attempts then turn over and start, after that it was fine all day, eventually it just clicked and refused to turn over, the problem was the battery isolation switch not making a solid connection, hence why it originally only failed at the start of each day out. Hope this helps to add to the check list if any one else has this problem.

The more you hear about issues with starting, it seems the MORE attention that is paid to "walking thru the ENTIRE" electronics and checking every connection usually will locate the issue. I am so happy to not have a "Big Boat" as that process must truly be a pain in the _ss...

All good info, hopeful I will never need to remember it, but I would have never thought to even look there...
