Default Hino exhaust riser replacement

I have this posted over on the technical post area as well.
It looks like it might be time for me to look at replacing my exhaust risers inclusive of the lower turbo elbows as well.
Looking at the market, it would appear that I can either go with OEM style cast iron units (expensive by comparison) or I can go with aftermarket re-engineered stainless steel units. These appear to be about 2/3 of the price of the "Cast Iron" type
I am certain that tons of you guys have faced this decision and I would appreciate your feed back and opinions on the pros and cons of both types that are available.
Who have you bought from?
Who has the best price?
Our boat is a 1989 3288MY with 130hp Hinos in it. The boat has been in Salt all of it's life.
If the cast ones last as long again as these have (close to 20 years), then the extra 30% to go to cast iron might be worth it.
On a side note, my thougths are to have either one of the units ceramic coated as I have done with every set of exhaust headers I have ever put on a vehicle. By doing this I would be to reduce or eliminate the salt water exposure to the raw metal.
Any ideas here as well?
Perplexed
Dave

Howdy -

Just went through this ....same dilemma. Our engines are the same age and both Hino's. I ran into some nice folks and got some great service from: http://www.greenwaterheatexchangers.com/

In my case I had read other account were folks were cutting fiberglass and the like, but this guy tweaked his design a bit and they dropped right in.

I also think I save some weight were I don't need it!

I replaced my risers with the stainless steel ones from Green Water Heat Exchangers about 2 1/2 years ago and I am quite pleased with them. One mechanic who worked on my engines before I had them replaced recommended the cast iron risers given the problems he has seen in the past with some of the SS risers. However, after installing these he commented that if he were to design his own it would be like these, so he was pretty impressed. I also felt they were very responsive when I ordered them plus they were reasonably priced. Here is their link:

Good luck.

Default National Marine Exhaust!

Don't forget to check out Scott at National Marine Exhaust. He was at the Bayliner Rendezvous this weekend at Roche Harbor. He answers lots of questions here on the site, and he's extremely knowledgeable. robster

I got almost 10 years out of my original exhaust risers on our 47 and replaced them with Hino risers-the ones that Merc redesigned that are rounder than the original Hinos. Bayliner replaced my original Hino risers when boat was 2 months old and used the Merc designed risers to reduce smoking. I have a couple of friends that have had bad experiences with stainess (I think three different aftermarket types) and their cost was quite a bit higher so I went with cast iron since these lasted 10 years and I won't own the boat that much longer. Purchased the Hino cast iron risers from folks in Nanaimo, BC since they were cheaper than the US supplier in Anacortes, Wa at the time, including duty and shipping.

Cast iron doesn't need to be wrapped with insulation, but the biggest issue is resale. Given a choice I'd take original equipment over an after market add-on. The after market add-on could cost some value and maybe a sale.

Default 135 risers

Dave,

Check your private message when you have a chance. I have sent a picture with some information regarding some riser options for your boat. Feel free to check out the "Mall" section of this web site. Let me know if you have any questions.

Thank you,

Scott

To mmichellich, we have spoken to the folks in Nainimo and they were actually about $350.00 higher per side then any of the Satinless priceing that I have got. Did you go through BOC and get a better price from them?
If it was within the last year, can I ask what you paid?
