We were in the Broughton Islands when i noticed my engine room had been sprayed with salt water and found a pin-sized hole in my stbd riser made by Natl Marine Exhaust.
Patched with 5200 it last till we got back about 440 miles later. I took both off and sent to NME who told me the one with the leak could be repaired and would last a yr or two. But the Port side had an internal leak and could ruin my turbo and engine! S0, for $3200 i can replace them. :>) Tony Athens says saltwater time will do that and to expect there is nothing i can do (except maybe use a fresh water flush?). He said they are well-made but due to the design of the boat there is not enough height to use an elbow etc. So Bayliner and Meridian owners, be aware of the possible damage from your shower-can style risers even if they are only 6.5 yrs old. FYI 556 hrs on the engines. |

Same thing has happened to several friends with different mfg stainless risers. That is why I installed another set of cast iron risers that lasted 9 years.

I also went with Cast Iron this summer - had them ceramic coated. Hope to double 9yrs on old ones (and yes I hope to own the boat that long to see)

If two identical Hino powered vessels were available, one with new Hino cast iron and the other with after market stainless, I'd buy the cast iron and not even consider the stainless.

My old risers lasted 20 years on our '87 4588 . When Earl found they were just about shot last year, he convinced me to stay with the cast units. I believe they were around $3300. He had them sent 1 day air from Washington to California. The boat has spent all but 5 years of its time in fresh water, that is probably why they lasted so long. If I can get another 20 years out of them...oh yea right, who am I kidding, I probably won't be around in 20 years! Steve

Details? You know the cast ones work and know they have a more or less 10 year life (mine lasted 13+ years). They look like they belong on the engine. Some stainless need wrapping due high heat, some turn blue from heat, a poster above listed premature pin holes in his stainless. Stainless is cheaper and maybe there is a message there about other maintenance on that vessel. You'll hear from many satisfied stainless customers so my comments are simply my opinion. I'd choose original manufacturer's equipment over after market every time.

I appologize for not saying the engines are 370 B Cummins 2001. I agree, my Hinos on my 4588 were iron and lasted at least 9 years. I do not think Meridian or Bayliner put iron risers on the 4788 after 2000?
Anyway it is a big job to change them out. |
